UK presents French farce that inspired American opera

Herald-Leader Staff Report

While the University of Kentucky Opera opens its first production of the season this week, the University of Kentucky Theatre will give audiences a look at the source material for the opera's big fall 2007 production.

With Thomas Pasatieri's Hotel Casablanca, UK had a world premiere production in conjunction with the San Francisco Opera. Now, UK Theatre presents the play that inspired the opera: A Flea in Her Ear by French playwright Georges Feydeau, which will run Oct. 16-26.

The plot of the play, which will be directed by Russell Henderson at UK, will be familiar to people who saw the opera. A wealthy French woman suspects that her husband is being unfaithful when his sexual appetite disappears. To test his fidelity, she has her best friend send him a note requesting a rendezvous at a sleazy hotel. That one note sets off a chain of misinterpretations and misidentifications.

The main difference between the play and the opera is that Hotel Casablanca was set in Texas, whereas Flea takes place in France.
